A Malaysia-Japan joint-venture company, Hitachi Sunway Information Systems Sdn Bhd, is making a foray into Cambodia after securing a deal with Aeon Co to supply point-of-sales (POS) systems to the Japanese retailer.

The POS systems will be used to facilitate transactions for the tenants of the mall, said Hitachi Sunway chief executive officer Cheah Kok Hoong.

Aeon is reportedly spending US$205 million (RM672.7 million) to set up a 3-story Aeon Mall in Phnom Penh, slated for opening in the first half of this year.

"The contract amount is not substantial, but it is a good start," Cheah said, refusing to reveal the financial terms.

The move is set to pave the way for the company to gain a stronger foothold in ASEAN. It already has a presence in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

"Hitachi is a global brand but we (Sunway Technology) are not," Cheah said of the joint venture that boosted Sunway Technology's profile in the region.
