In its Smart Data Management Survey 2013 results, IDC found that big data usage in Malaysia includes the capture and analysis of transactional data, log files, text from communication systems, web logs, sensor/machine-to-machine data, video, audio, chats on social networks and global positioning system data from mobile devices.
Survey participants want to be able to securely access company data from outside the office from any device, locate company data quickly for compliance or e-Discovery purposes, perform a global search for company data across multiple data silos/repositories and quickly retrieve old data or files (of more than five years).
In his report, Daniel-Zoe Jimenez, a senior program manager for Big Data & Analytics and NGEA at IDC, noted that the main issues driving companies towards big data storage include compliance with regulations and internal and external audits, following e-Discovery policies (legal hold protocols, court orders, analysis, markup and production), and internal rules and policies.
In Malaysia, 75% of those surveyed said having access to the right data at the right time in order to support decision-making, analysis or planning requirements is critical.
