Cypress IoT SDK adds Apple HomeKit support

Semiconductor company Cypress has updated its WICED software development kit and added HomeKit support, allowing device manufacturers to integrate Apple’s smart home platform more easily.

The company brought two features in the update – iCloud certification and HomeKit support. The new version of the platform will allow developers and manufacturers to more easily create devices which can be controlled via Apple’s Home app or voice assistant Siri. No supporting bridge will be needed.

By using Cypress’s WICED development platform and ultra-low power CYW20719 Bluetooth microcontroller, manufacturers can integrate HomeKit into devices such as smart light bulbs.

Cypress’s platform WICED (Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices) can eliminate the need to implement various protocols to connect devices, therefore saving time and costs for developers.

The WICED SDK integrates iCloud, Amazon Web Services, IBM Bluemix, Alibaba Cloud, Microsoft Azure and other private cloud services. Developers have the option to combine the SDK with Cypress’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth solutions which support multiple operating systems such as Windows, MacOS and Linux.

Developers can also utilize the WICED connectivity suite to incorporate microcontrollers, either from Cypress or third-party manufacturers, for complex IoT applications.

In its announcement Cypress also promotes CYW43907 SoC, which integrates dual-band IEEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi with a 320-MHz ARM Cortex-R4 RISC processor and 2 MB of SRAM. The WICED SDK provides code examples, tools and development support for the SoC.

The WICED platform is already used in Leviton’s Decora smart lighting products like switches and dimmers with HomeKit support, Cypress said.
