Ruhr-Park Parkhausbetriebsgesellschaft, a German parking facility in Essen, deployed an IP video surveillance solution in December 2002 to combat rising vandalism and lower the risk of attacks on vehicles and operators. Data Security & Service (DSS), a local system integrator, offered a tailored solution integrating Axis Communications cameras, Milestone VMS and a DSS parking module.

The solution builds on existing infrastructure, making it economical to implement. Combined with IP-based technology, the system produces high-quality digital video picture, with the capacity of 64-channel recording. Integrated motion sensors allow for the incident-controlled transmission of alarm pictures by Axis cameras. The digital solution guarantees flexible access to and use of the recording system. The network can be remotely accessed via ISDN or ADSL, and has a separate alarm contact unit connectable per TCP/IP. A flexible user interface allows users to configure the cameras, plan user rights, archive options, and email, SMS and MMS alarms. The Milestone VMS alarm center can also evaluate alarms in several different parking lots.

Information from entrance and exit terminals, pay booths, barriers and external alarms is gathered and displayed centrally. The video cameras are, therefore, an integral part of the parking system and provide information on pay booth break-ins, attacks, fraud or vandalism.
