Palmira, a municipality in Valle del Cauca (or Cauca Valley Department) in the southwest of Colombia, is home to more than 300,000 inhabitants and a major air transportation hub in the region. Over the years, the city's aging analog CCTV system had experienced more malfunctions and failures, as many cameras' life cycle expired. In 2012, the municipal administration began replacing 30 analog speed domes with IP cameras. To improve video quality, the administration opted for IP architecture and optical fiber to build a network four to five stories above ground at strategic and populated sites.
The solution provides real-time video data to local law enforcers, while ensuring efficient security services for the expanding city. Inarcsoft, a local system integrator that specializes in IP video surveillance, replaced the cameras with Messoa Technologies megapixel speed domes. The dome can perform under various light levels and is capable of delivering clear images in dark environments. Its 20x optical zoom, along with powerful PTZ and patrol capabilities, enables the camera to capture sharp images when focusing on distant objects, a necessary requirement for the project, since the cameras are installed high above ground. The cost-effectiveness rendered also met the administration's budget and image requirements.
Following the camera replacements, the optical network will be deployed shortly, allowing for long-distance, large-scale HD video transmission. The new network will provide sufficient bandwidth and ensure smooth data traffic during real-time remote monitoring.
