Smiths Detection Awarded $43.5 Million TSA Contract for X-Ray Detection Systems

Smiths Detection received an order valued at US$43.5 million from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for its X-ray systems to be deployed at airport checkpoints across the U.S.

The order is one of the first delivery orders placed against a five-year, indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract with a ceiling of $325 million. The award of the IDIQ contract was announced earlier in September.

“This is an important order from TSA. Our X-ray technology provides enhanced capabilities at airport checkpoints with the potential for significant performance upgrades in the future,” said Stephen Phipson, President of Smiths Detection.

The systems, which are manufactured in Edgewood, Maryland, capture multiple views of carry-on bags in a single sweep to provide more information about every piece of luggage. They also feature software algorithms which can be upgraded to detect evolving threats.
