Indian company Larsen & Toubro chose U.K. firm AMG Systems to cooperate on the surveillance and security systems for traffic management and the new road project.

AMG Systems was contracted by Larsen & Toubro (L&T)one of Indiaˇs largest private sector companiesto supply its new innovative fiber optic transmission system Guardian-Lite 3700 for traffic management and control of five new toll roads in India.

AMG Systems Ltd is one of the world's leading providers of fiber optic transmission equipment designed for CCTV surveillance operations in the transportation and security sectors. Carrying real-time, full-bandwidth video, audio, and data signals, the company's equipment is installed on highways, tunnels, rail links, ports, airports and buildings around the globe to enhance safety and security for all users.

In 2006, AMG launched their fiber optic transmission system, which integrates Ethernet and low-speed data with high quality uncompressed video. AMG was the first in the world to launch this type of innovative technology and remains as one of the leaders in this field. The system has subsequently been selected for a number of traffic management projects, most notably the U.K. Highways Agencyˇs National Roads Telecommunications Services (NRTS) project, and traffic management and control of Dublin City and surrounding motorways. Todayˇs announcement is seen as solid testament to the increasing global market demand for the companyˇs sophisticated technology.

Commanding and Installing

Manoj Dave, Head of O&M (Roads) at L&T, said: ¨The projects all called for a dual redundant system for real-time, uncompressed video transmission and the ability to cope with multiple add-on modules via Ethernet. We needed this capability over all the project stretches, irrespective of normal or redundant path of data transmission, without additional equipment or repeaters.〃

SNMP-compliant network management for remote fault monitoring, reporting and diagnosis was also a must. In all instances, the projects implemented PTZ cameras, but a number of variable message signs, traffic counters/classifiers and metrological stations were also added. The 3700 series was compliant with all requirements, and everything went smoothly during the process. ¨All inquiries were attended to on time,〃 said Dave, ¨and we also visited the company for final evaluation of the equipment prior to ordering.〃

¨We are absolutely delighted to have been selected for these five new road projects in India,〃 commented Dr. Alan Hayes, founder and Managing Director of AMG Systems. The construction plans for new roads as well as the increased traffic densityespecially around the major citiesmake India a prime market for AMGˇs uncompressed digital CCTV transmission solutions for traffic management. Overall, the Indian market for security and surveillance solutions is growing rapidly.

Won the Concessions

Although the end-user ultimately is the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), four of the five new toll road projects are built-operate-transfer (BOT) and L&T won the concessions for a period of 15 to 20 years including the construction period.

Aside from the design, engineering, construction, development, finance, operation and maintenance of the roads and their facilities, L&T will also be responsible for toll collection and traffic managementtwo of the prime activitiesover the length of the concession periods, post construction. For the 76-kilometer stretch on the Plalanpur- Swaroopgunj section on National Highway No. 14 (NH14) in the state of Gujarat and Rajasthan, L&T is responsible for design, engineering, construction, development, finance, operation and maintenance of the road and its facilities, but the toll collection will still be done by the NHAI.

The data transmission systems on all five toll roads will be installed, tested and commissioned by L&Tˇs Electrical Business Group (EBG) along with their systems integration partner Telefon Gradnja based in Croatia.
