Mining operations often span large, remote areas, making continuous security monitoring a challenge across both surface and underground environments.
At one gold mine in South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin, the security team needed to expand coverage across large perimeter areas while maintaining reliable detection over long distances. At another gold mine in the country's West Rand, the focus was on protecting the mine office and surrounding critical facilities, where continuous monitoring was required across key access routes and facility boundaries, particularly at night.
To meet these requirements, the mining sites deployed
Raythink thermal imaging cameras across more than 150 monitoring points. The deployments included elevated long-range monitoring across perimeter areas, as well as fixed-point surveillance around mine offices and critical facilities.
Extending Perimeter Visibility at a Gold Mine in the Witwatersrand Basin
Located in South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin, the gold mine covers extensive surface areas with long perimeter sections, scattered facilities, and multiple access routes. For the security team, maintaining visibility across such a large site required more than conventional ground-level monitoring.
The customer wanted to extend monitoring distances across open perimeter areas, improve nighttime detection, and reduce the need for frequent physical patrols in areas that were difficult to monitor continuously.
Raythink deployed
FC465T Dual-Spectrum Bullet Cameras and PC4 Dual-Spectrum PTZ Cameras at elevated positions, with more than
100 monitoring points established across the site. Depending on the location and coverage requirements, individual monitoring points provide approximately
500 m to 1.5 km of monitoring range.
Deployed at elevated positions, the FC465T provides fixed perimeter monitoring, while the PC4 enables 360° wide-area security and long-range target detection and tracking.
The fixed FC465T cameras provide continuous monitoring of designated perimeter sections, while the
PC4 PTZ cameras provide flexible wide-area security from elevated positions. Equipped with a
1280 × 1024 thermal sensor, the PC4 delivers high-resolution thermal imagery for long-range detection. It also supports
person, vehicle, and commercial drone detection.
“The elevated thermal cameras have significantly improved our visibility across the perimeter. Our security team can monitor larger areas remotely and assess potential incidents before deciding whether physical intervention is necessary.”

Protecting Critical Facilities at a West Rand Gold Mine
At another gold mine in South Africa's West Rand, the security challenge was more concentrated around the
mine office and surrounding critical facilities.
These areas support personnel, equipment, and daily mining operations and therefore require continuous protection against unauthorized access, theft, and other security incidents. With limited lighting in some areas at night, maintaining continuous visibility across facility boundaries and access routes without frequent physical patrols can be challenging.
The customer deployed more than
50 Raythink FC465T Dual-Spectrum Bullet Cameras around the mine office and surrounding critical areas. The cameras provide fixed-point thermal monitoring of key access routes and facility boundaries, while intelligent analytics support line-crossing and regional intrusion detection.
50+ FC465T cameras installed around the mine office and critical facilities for continuous monitoring of key access routes and facility boundaries.
In one nighttime incident, an FC465T detected a person approaching a restricted area and triggered an alert. Security personnel remotely verified the person's presence and movement through the camera system before deciding to dispatch personnel to the location.
This remote verification capability has become an important part of the site's security workflow, allowing personnel to assess potential incidents before entering the area and helping reduce unnecessary physical responses.
Beyond the Featured Deployments
Beyond the two deployments featured above, Raythink offers additional solutions for different mining security requirements.
For
wide-area perimeter surveillance, the
SilentW-U Infrared Panoramic Camera can work with long-range PTZ cameras to provide
360° continuous monitoring, completing one full rotation in approximately
2 seconds. Once a target or intrusion is detected, the PTZ camera can be triggered to track and zoom in on the target, with monitoring distances of
more than 5 km depending on the configuration and site conditions.
For
underground mining, TE365 and TE464G explosion-proof thermal cameras provide monitoring in complete darkness and challenging environments, supporting personnel and vehicle monitoring, hazardous-area protection, and early detection of abnormal heat or fire.
