When crisis strikes: How emergency response systems protect corporate campuses

From time to time, companies and corporations are subject to various types of emergencies ranging from fires to natural disasters. When an emergency strikes, it’s incumbent upon organizations to inform authorities and protect their workers/visitors in the quickest manner. In this regard, an integrated emergency response platform can play an effective role.
 

Types of emergencies

 
Corporations and enterprises are large employers with office space spread across entire buildings. Some corporations own multiple buildings on a single site, forming corporate campuses. Most of the time, employees work in peace in corporate campuses. Yet occasionally, these buildings are subject to different types of emergencies.
 
“Corporate campuses face a wide range of emergencies, from routine safety incidents to major crises. Common events include workplace violence, medical emergencies, fires, hazardous material releases, severe weather, utility outages, unauthorized access, perimeter breaches and suspicious packages. Large campuses may also contend with cyber-physical disruptions that affect building operations, communications or critical infrastructure,” said Andreas Beerbaum, VP of Global Physical Security Sales and Service at Octave.
 
“Enterprise campuses combine high-density office space, research facilities, manufacturing, warehouses, dining halls, parking structures, and public green space across multi-building environments. Consequently, their risk profile spans both high-impact physical threats and complex operational disruptions,” said Charlie Forsyth, Director, Enterprise Resilience Solutions at Motorola Solutions, who cites four types of emergencies that corporate campuses may be faced with:
 
Severe weather and environmental hazards: These include tornadoes, flash floods, hurricanes, severe winter storms, wildfires, and hazardous air quality events that require synchronized multi-building sheltering-in-place, phased evacuations, and regional campus closures;
 
Facilities and operational disruptions: Infrastructure failures such as power outages, water main breaks, hazardous material spills, supply chain bottlenecks, or cyber/IT network disruptions can immediately impact business continuity and employee safety;
 
Medical and health emergencies: High-occupancy campuses may have to contend with medical incidents, for example cardiac events in multi-story facilities, or site-specific health protocols requiring rapid first-responder routing and area isolation;
 
Active safety and physical security threats: These include workplace violence, active assailants, unauthorized intrusions, localized civil disturbances, and unconfirmed bomb threats that require immediate facility containment, targeted lock-downs, and rapid coordination with law enforcement.
 

Recent examples

 
Reports of emergencies at corporate buildings/campuses can be seen from time to time. Recent examples include a 2025 fire incident at the European headquarters of Nike in Hilversum, the Netherlands, where a hybrid vehicle caught fire in an underground garage beneath the office complex. The incident forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 employees, who were evacuated to a safe distance outside the building. No injuries were reported.
 
Then, in 2024, Tesla's newly opened European Gigafactory near Berlin halted production after a suspected arson attack nearby left the complex without power. The attack set an electricity pylon close to the site ablaze, but the fire did not spread to the Tesla facility which employed around 12,500 people, all of whom were evacuated. While no one was hurt, the outage and production halt cost Tesla estimated losses in the high hundred of millions of euros.
 
As it turns out, fires are not the only safety issues facing European businesses these days. “At the same time, organizations must prepare for regional threats such as severe weather and wildfires, which continue to affect business operations and employee safety across Europe,” Beerbaum said. “The common denominator is that security teams must quickly determine what is happening, where it is happening and who may be affected so they can coordinate an effective response.”
 

Importance of emergency response systems

 
This, then, underscores the importance of an integrated emergency response and mass notification system that has become increasingly vital for corporate campuses. With such systems, authorities and first responders can be informed of the situation immediately, while workers and visitors can be kept up-to-date constantly on what’s happening and what to do next.
 
“An integrated emergency response platform helps organizations move from detection to action more quickly by bringing together information that would otherwise exist in separate systems. Video feeds, access control events, alarms, sensors, maps and communications are combined into a single operational picture, allowing operators to validate incidents and make informed decisions faster,” Beerbaum said.
 
According to Forsyth, a good emergency response system should achieve the following: Disseminate authoritative information at scale, where targeted populations receive simultaneous, clear instructions across their preferred communication channels and native languages on what’s going on and what should be done; minimize friction, where rather than logging into disparate administrative systems during a high-stress event, operators use unified, streamlined “SnapSend” interfaces to launch pre-scripted, compliant emergency playbooks with just a few clicks; and gain speed through automation, where, by coupling mass notification with a dedicated crisis management solution, launching an alert automatically assigns tasks across crisis response teams, populates incident logs, and updates executive dashboards.
 
“During a crisis, cognitive overload is the greatest enemy. Disseminating authoritative and timely communications requires an intuitive operator experience with strict role-based controls to get the right message out to the right people, while vastly reducing the likelihood and impact of human error,” Forsyth said.
 

How it works

 
Typically, an emergency response system receives emergency data from different sensors, determines what is going on, notifies the right people and executes a response procedure.
 
“In practice, an incident may begin with an alarm, a camera alert, a sensor trigger or a report from an employee. The platform automatically correlates the available information, presents the location and relevant context to operators and guides personnel through predefined response procedures. This can include initiating a lockdown, directing an evacuation, notifying stakeholders or escalating the event to emergency services. By standardizing response processes and providing real-time situational awareness, organizations can reduce confusion and improve outcomes,” Beerbaum said.
