Singaporean government to use public cameras and ERP against terrorism

In light of recent global events, the Singaporean government has announced that they will be using public transport video cameras and the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system installed around the city to collect data that will help authorities deter potential terrorist attacks or dangerous situations arising from religious or racial conflicts, according to asiaone.

This decision was just one of several new government initiatives that will be implemented nationwide aimed at enhancing the country's overall security capabilities. This move will reportedly enable the government to track the movements of people of interest and analyze patterns; thus, providing authorities with the information they need to effectively deal with the situation.

In his keynote address at the Home Team Leaders' Forum, K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, stressed the importance of enhancing security vigilance also through measures such as increasing the number of video surveillance cameras across the city, in residential blocks and public areas such as transportation hubs and neighborhood centers.

According to the details of the speech released by Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs, installation of additional cameras around the island will start as early as this year and is expected to be completed within the next four years.
