Korean government had put out a blue print to make South Korea into a strong 5G network country in the future.
Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIFP) had announced “Creative 5G Mobile Strategy” to create more jobs and improve ICT industry and related businesses.
The goal of this project is to make Korea the top 5G mobile phone market, have 20% share of the equipment market, rank 1st in the global patent ranking, and create 16,000 more jobs by 2020.
MSIFP views that it will cost both the civilian and the government about $1.5 billion as the investment budget for the next 7 years till 2020.
5G technology is 1,000 times faster than 4G LTE. While it takes about 40 seconds to download 800MB size movie with LTE, it only takes a second for 5G. It seems that the technology will be commercialized in 2020.
MSIFP will develop the 5 core services first and then move onto the commercializing stage. They are pursuing after future SNS, 3D mobile videos, intellectual services, ultra high speed services, UHD/Hologram technology developments for the core services. They will try out the outcome in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic.
