Macau's Transportation Infrastructure Office (GIT) has placed a follow-on order with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to supply an additional 48 cars for the Macau Light Rapid Transit (MLRT) system.

The MLRT system is currently under construction as part of an initiative of the government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) in China.

MHI, in collaboration with ITOCHU Corporation will also provide depot equipment and vehicle maintenance services up to a maximum of 10 years.

The new cars are intended to meet future development and anticipation of robust passenger volume after the new system enters into operational service.

As an automated people mover (APM), the fully automated, driverless mass transit MLRT system operates on rubber tires providing its passengers a smooth and quiet ride.

The MLRT APM cars are likely to operate between Macau's Taipa Island and the Border Gate crossing to Zhuhai City in Guangdong Province, covering a distance of roughly 21km.

With the latest order, MHI is planning to market APM systems in future for expansion or replacement of existing transportation systems across the globe.

GIT placed orders for 110 cars and machinery and electronics systems for the MLRT in March 2011.

MHI is also delivering 108 new cars for the Yurikamome Waterfront Line in Tokyo and 57 cars for the Sengkang and Punggol Lines in Singapore.
