Danish beer giant Carlsberg has cleared the required rules and regulations to realize its planned investment in a new brewery in Myanmar in Bago industrial zone north of Yangon.

The company has partnered with Myanmar Golden Star (MGS) Breweries at the end of 2012 to brew and market Carlsberg beers in Myanmar and to export them to the EU market. The investment into the plant is up to $50 million. The joint venture Myanmar Carlsberg Co. Ltd. is 51% owned by Carlsberg.

One reason to set up the factory in the Bago region was to get access to "good quality water and the famous Bago rice," the company said.

Copenhagen-based Carlsberg has been on an expansion drive in Southeast Asia for many years. In Thailand, the company has partnered with Singha Corporation, the producer of Singha and Leo beer brands, in Laos it owns 50% of Lao Brewery, in Cambodia 100% of Angkor Brewery, in Vietnam it owns Hue Brewery and it also has subsidiaries in Singapore and Malaysia.
