The 27th Southeast Asian Games kicks off in Myanmar on Dec 11, 2013. The country, which has a history of violence, has boosted security in preparation for expected influx of visitors and participating athletes.

“We welcome all the SEA Games participants. Please don't worry about your safety. We, including all the high-ranking officers, will provide full security for areas like Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyidaw and all the sporting venues,” said in October Lieutenant Colonel Myint Aye, the Yangon East District police chief.

Local police have already put in place additional video surveillance equipment and x-ray scanners at sporting venues to protect athletes and spectators. There will also be plain-clothes police in the crowd to provide assistance in case of emergencies as well as prevent disturbances. Police officers have undergone additional training to prepare for the event; police officers will be present at each gate to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering the venues.

Hotel security has also been tightened, with hotels across Myanmar spending US$6 million to train hotel staff and to upgrade video surveillance systems. Hotels are also instructed to inform the authorities of any suspicious people or activities.

The SEA Games will take place from Dec 11 to 22, 2013.
