U.S. telecom giant Verizon has released a new product called Verizon SmartHub which combines the functionalities of 4G LTE router, smart home control hub and landline phone.
As a 4G LTE router, the device provides high-speed Internet connection from the carrier’s own network for various connected devices at home, like mobile phones, tablets and laptops.
The device serves a smart home hub by working with the Verizon Home companion app, through which users can monitor and control smart home devices. They can adjust lighting and set thermostat temperatures, for example.
Several third-party devices will be supported by the SmartHub. The full support list hasn’t yet be revealed, but companies like Nest, Kwikset , Aeon Labs, Fibaro, Honeywell and Philips are on the list.
For those who have a Verizon landline phone at home, the SmartHub enables them to make HD Voice calls from the existing home phone number.
Furthermore, the device has its own battery, which means it can still have phone and internet functions in case of a power outage.
Verizon says the SmartHub is a modernly designed device and its portable size means it is suitable for use in homes, offices and even on vacation. The device has a color display on the top allowing users to read information like data usage and Wi-Fi passwords.
The Verizon SmartHub is now available for US$199.99 or US$99.99 with a two-year contract. There’s no further details on whether Verizon will offer data packages since the router could process a lot of data to support all the connected gadgets at home.
