Over 3 million households are expected to be installed with connected smart meters across Taiwan by 2024, reports said Tuesday.

According to the local Chinese-language newspaper Economic Daily News, the state-run Taiwan Power Corp. (Taipower) will begin installing 200,000 digital meters next year to replace the existing analog-type meters. Meanwhile, it will begin shelling out smart meters across the island’s one million households by 2020, eventually reaching more than three million units by 2024.

The move is part of the government’s initiative to ease the tight supply of power during peak hours and lower peak power consumption with smart electricity meters, reports said.

To date, high-voltage power users, mainly factories and large companies, have installed 24,000 smart electricity meters in total, and low-voltage power users have installed 10,000 units on a trial basis.

The government plans to have general low-voltage power users, such as retail stores and restaurants, install smart electricity meters.

The average cost for a smart electricity meter is estimated at NT$8,000 (US$266), with Taipower responsible for procurement and installation.
