The global biometrics market for the military is expected to see strong growth over the next four years, boosted by increasing security concerns worldwide.

According to a report from Technavio, the market is expected to grow at 7 percent from 2016 to 2020.

“The global military biometrics market is forecasted to grow at a steady pace owing to the growing security concerns and increasing illegal migration of people worldwide,” said Moutushi Saha, lead analyst at Technavio for defense research.  “Many countries have set up biometric infrastructures to control illicit flows of people.”

The report categorizes global military biometrics market into four major segments. The top three among them are fingerprint identification, facial recognition and iris recognition.

The fingerprint identification biometrics market in the military sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7 percent. This is the most widely adopted technology due to its low hardware requirements and easy implementation.

“The growing adoption of mobile and hand-held biometrics has increased the adoption of fingerprint biometric technology,” release regarding the report said. “The US military is planning to upgrade its tactical biometrics with Identity Dominance System 2. The military has been enrolling Afghanistan citizens' fingerprints into CrossMatch's Secure Electronic Enrollment Kit (SEEK-II) system. It is a ruggedized computer with a built-in fingerprint scanner, digital camera, and iris scanner. The SEEK II digital fingerprint reader requires the finger to be rolled to get a complete print, in addition to 'flat' prints.”

On the other hand, the facial recognition market in the sector is expected to grow 9 percent. This mode of biometrics is widely used border security and surveillance. Increasing terrorist activities and illegal immigration, especially in places like Europe, has prompted better security solutions at borders and this is set to help the growth of facial recognition systems.

Iris recognition market is also expected to increase 9 percent. The report notes that iris recognition is increasingly being considered the most accurate biometric technology.
“The US military has been using iris scan technology for over a decade in Iraq and Afghanistan to authorize selected individual's entry into the military facilities in the US bases,” said Saha.
