Ever since Canon’s stunning acquisition of Axis Communications, all eyes have been watching how the two would collaborate to advance their technologies even further. Axis’s recent announcement of a new camera combined with Canon’s cutting-edge optics perhaps sheds some light on the kind of synergy this deal creates.
“On a product level, this announcement shows the viability and benefits of integrating Canon components from its other camera lines with an Axis security product,” said Olof Leidecker, Global product Manager at Axis.
The Q1659, Axis’s first fixed box ultra-high megapixel camera, features Canon’s digital single lens reflex (DSLR) optics and a choice of seven different automatic focusing lenses with the Canon EF/EF-S mount. The camera delivers 20MP resolution at 8 frames per second and works particularly well in verticals where detailed monitoring of large spaces over long distances is in demand.
“It is suitable for city surveillance, stadiums/arenas and airports/transportation, offering outstanding image performance in demanding lighting conditions and is well suited to observing open spaces and across long distances,” Leidecker said. “The unique features of the combination of Axis’s video encoding and Canon’s high-performance image sensor and EF/EF-S lenses include superior-quality images packed with detail, and easy and intuitive installation and operation.”
The Q1659 is also supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software through the Axis Application Development Partner (ADP) Program and the Axis Camera Station. Third-party video analytics applications can be installed on the camera via the Axis Camera Application Platform. ONVIF support allows for easy integration into existing video surveillance systems.
The new camera also offers the latest enhancement of Axis’ Zipstream technology, which offers more storage and bandwidth savings in video surveillance applications without compromising on important image details. In addition, an SFP slot for optional fiber connectivity gives the ability to connect to the network over long distances.
The Q1659 is planned to be available in Q1 2017 through Axis distribution. The pricing of the network camera will start at US$4,999 including Canon’s EF-S 24mm f/2.8 lens, according to Leidecker.
On whether Axis will roll out more solutions that are combined with Canon’s technology, Leidecker said that remains to be seen. “We will evaluate other type of collaboration and integration on a case-by-case basis, based on customer requirements and the appropriateness of the relevant Canon technology to be used with Axis cameras,” he said.
