With the acquisition of Innovative Security Designs (ISD), FLIR expects to add the expertise to develop mid- to high-end visible cameras to its product line up to become an end-to-end solution provider.

Speaking to asmag.com, John Distelzweig, VP & GM at FLIR Security elaborated on what the company expects from the deal.

“The acquisition adds an additional level of expertise to FLIR’s technology portfolio,” Distelzweig said. “ISD is known for developing innovative IP security solutions that combine high-resolution digital video cameras with built-in leading edge technologies. Furthermore, this acquisition strengthens FLIR’s position as an end-to-end video surveillance provider by adding the technology and expertise to develop mid- to high-end visible cameras.”

The deal follows FLIR’s acquisition of DVTEL, a move that was expected to strengthen the thermal imaging company’s offering in the higher end of the market. Both these deals come after FLIR acquired Lorex, a company that provided homes and businesses bundled video surveillance systems and equipment. With the acquisition of ISD, FLIR would be able to close a gap at mid to high-end visible camera market to become an end-to-end solution provider.

Deal adds a small company with strong expertise

FLIR would also benefit from ISD’s customer base, to which the company would be able to extend its comprehensive security solutions.

“ISD has a loyal customer base, in addition to supporting all of ISD’s existing products FLIR will benefit from providing valued customers with access to FLIR’s end-to-end security solutions, featuring an open platform design, state-of-the-art analytics, and the widest range of video security products,” Distelzweig said.

This customer base, however, is mostly limited to the US, which makes it relatively small in size but the company comes with some unique technology like edge-based, megapixel IP surveillance system. ISD had received much attention when it released an embedded Windows-based camera three years ago and won the best new product award at a major security trade show.

The Irvine, California-based company was founded by Ian Johnston, who, prior to starting it was the Chief Technology Officer  IQinVision. It’s worth noting that  IQinVision was the first company to bring megapixel resolution IP cameras to the market.

ISD was acquired by Digital Watchdog (DW) in 2014, which maintained it as an independent company.
