Ambarella announced the new S3L camera System-On-Chip (SoC). S3L makes the 2X compression advantages of HEVC/H.265 available at mainstream IP camera price points (for IP camera designs targeted at the home monitoring and mainstream professional markets). S3L offers an array of advanced image processing techniques including HDR (high dynamic range) imaging, de-warping for wide angle lenses, very low power and a fast CPU for applications and analytics. S3L can encode both H.264 and H.265 streams simultaneously for backward compatibility. There are two S3L SoC families; one of which offers an 11x11mm SoC for entry level and consumer cameras.

Based on numbers from analysts that Ambarella has spoken with directly, Ambarella expects the consumer IP camera market to reach around 10M units this year and the professional IP camera market to reach around 50M units this year.
Ambarella supplies chips to the majority of the major IP camera manufacturers including
Hikvision,
Dahua,
Bosch,
Axis,
Panasonic and
Pelco. One year ago, Ambarella introduced S3, the first 4K HEVC/H.265 solution for these manufacturers to use in their high-end professional IP camera designs.
