Although the recovery of the Eurozone remains tepid, the overall global economy is expected to experience a robust growth in 2014, accelerating from 2.9% to 3.6 %, according to an IMF report. Looking at the overview of Taiwan's security market; with a good understanding of public investments, domestic sales markets, as well as catering to the needs of data saving, customers, the SI market and better sub-systems integration, therefore, 2014 is still reckoned to be a year of opportunities.

Decreased public investments however, 4 major infrastructures are expected to continue expanding
Even though the government's annual budget for public works has been reduced; the CPC and Taipower will continue expanding their projects, meaning the security products will also be introduced corresponding to the schedules for expansion. In addition, the public hydraulic projects have also been included into government's special budget — due to the recent successful integrations of the water-level warning system and the monitoring devices — these public hydraulic projects are expected to boost the security market.

The science park projects will also be major highlights, not only the Hsinchu Science Park, Southern Taiwan Science Park and the Central Taiwan Science Park will receive more than $337 million for infrastructure, as well as the National Biotech Park project — the brainchild of Academia Sinica, Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall's expansion plan and the Chung Hsing New Village High-Level Research Park Project will be funded resourcefully. Considering that the government has just begun its land requisition for the Chung Hsing New Village High-Level Research Park Project — these science park projects will very likely become a new benchmark for the security industry.

Moreover, public security maintenance will be invested with more than $3 billion next year; this budget is $86 million more compared to last year and aims specifically at improving and elevating the internet security, cutting-edge detective equipment and video surveillance systems for transportation.

The 3 major domestic sales markets
The retail business, the financial industry and the market for business offices are also looking promising for security and surveillance services. “Most of the banks plan on replacing the old online surveillance systems with new ones,” says David Chen, general manager of sales department at Bosch. In addition, according to industry news also predicts that the strong growth in the market for business offices this year will continue to soar next year. This is mostly due to the booming cross-strait business opportunities, and hence the need for building offices for corporate headquarters is mounting.

Increasing needs for data saving
Since the arrival of ‘”The Big Data” era, the market for cloud management is also becoming more mature, therefore, the ability to support and backup with time efficiency will be important. “Even though the needs for saving of this Big Data wave will most likely to be absorbed by EMC, IBM and other leading companies; however, the needs for data saving in security and surveillance industry still exist,” says Simon Tsang, Vice President of Sales, APAC region, NETGEAR.

David Chen also predicts the needs for data saving and its products will continue to grow in the SMB market next year, additionally, market's demand for all-in-one NVR are expected to increase. “The online setups have to be easily operated for middle-scale companies,” says David Chen.

The competition for users and the new SI
“The biggest challenge for internet surveillance is not about product development; it is about how to satisfy users' needs. Therefore, instead of solely pursuing satisfaction for SI's needs, suppliers should actively try to understand their customers, and also focus on creating better product compatibility,” says Stacey Lien, Department Manager of International Sales Department 2 at Vivotek.

Furthermore, ‘diversity' is reckoned to be the new zeitgeist next year — the more diverse products are; the more opportunities will emerge in the applicable market. It is expected that the suppliers will put more effort to understand the end-users in 2014; on the other hand, this also means that the competition in the SI market will become even more severe and draconian, only the System Integrators with the ability to shoulder the enormous product resources from the suppliers are likely to lead.

Increasing needs for sub-systems integration
“There were immense efforts coming from the suppliers in promoting integration of IP technology in contact center solution for voice broadcasting in offices last year; this also signals a trend for horizontal development of systems integration in the future, specifically for the sub-systems integration,” says Steve Chen, Vice President at Alpha Pricing.

Additionally, Jacki Kao, Technical Vice General Manager at Hundure Technology also addresses the increasing needs for sub-systems integration , “Since TCP/IP communication has become mainstream for the access control, when the access control industry begins to embrace internet technology, the suppliers also have to start thinking about the possibility of ‘Behavior Analysis', ”says Jackie Kao.
