Legic Moves Local Public Transport in German City
Legic Identsystems' contactless payment card for buses and trams in the German city of Augsburg increased convenience and passenger control.
The Karocard is used as an annual card for public transport in Augsburg. Further uses for the card are being considered, such as an entry ticket for parking lots, as well as an electronic payment method at gas stations.
Working with Legic, the consultancy Cosmo.ID and the general contractor Multicard designed a contactless card for the Stadtwerke Augsburg. For the first time in Germany, the Stadtwerke has created an e-ticket for public transport. About 85,000 Augsburg citizens are already using the cards.
Future-Proof
As a first step, the “market partner” and “e-ticket” applications have been activated. Currently up to eight e-tickets can be used on the Karocard, as this is required by the German VDV (Association of German Transportation Companies).
An additional 15 functions are available, which can be added as needed, such as access control, time and attendance, cashless payment or club memberships. The Legic cards can be expanded in the future, supporting up to 127 applications of different types, sizes or from different suppliers on a single card.
All the data required is stored on the contactless Legic chip in the card. Lost or stolen cards can be blocked by the owner quickly, so misuse of tickets is ruled out. The Stadtwerke anticipates higher revenues by combining the customer card with the public transport e-ticket, as well as improved passenger control. Lost cards can be deactivated immediately. The possibility to create a new card in a short time is an additional service for customers.
