Smiths Detection won a US$12 million contract from the UK Ministry of Defence for the in-service support of the Integrated Biological Detection System (IBDS).

The two-year contract involves the procurement, storage and management of components essential to the biological testing process in the technology system.

Smiths Detection is a provider of government regulated security systems detecting chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) threats.

The IBDS, which can be transported by air and mounted on a vehicle, gives battlefield troops early warning of a biological warfare agent attack. The system includes a detection suite, including atmospheric sampling equipment, a meteorological station, NBC filtration, and environmental control for use in all climates.

“Smiths Detection is dedicated to providing life-saving solutions to protect, detect and respond to CBRNE and other dangerous and illegal threats,” said Andrew Lee, VP Integrated Systems. “Service and support is an essential part of the overall IBDS programme, designed to maintain full operational capability for the Ministry of Defence in the key area of biological detection. Our strong relationship with the MoD has been crucial in building and maintaining the skill base and managing the in-service support programme”.
