Amusement park operators are constantly working to find better, easier, and more efficient ways to manage their premises. To that end, operators can be aided by a variety of security technologies, such as video analytics.

According to Taiwan-based Huper Laboratories, people counting software can enhance ticketing operations by matching the number of people entering the park with the number of tickets sold. “What we can provide is to detect how many people have passed through this area,” said Albert Yang, President of Huper Laboratories. “If the operator sold three tickets, and there were three people passing by, then there is a match.

However, for people counting to work effectively, it must be accurate. For a venue with 2,000 people, for example, accuracy rates of 90 percent and 99 percent translate into a miscalculation of 200 people versus 20.

“If you only have 50 percent accuracy, that's not usable. But if you have 99 percent or even close to 100 percent, you can detect almost everyone passing by. Only if you are accurate, you can have useful applications,” Yang said.

Long lines forming in front of various rides are a constant headache for operators, and they can turn to queue management software to address this issue. “Our queue management software can estimate approximately how many people are in a queue. Once the figure exceeds a certain amount, the alarm will sound. We can also estimate the average time someone is being serviced. This is useful for management,” he said.
