“Mobile surveillance for vehicles is heavily user-defined. The surveillance requirements of a bus can be very different than the needs of a police car, and the school buses in the U.S. may require different add-ons than those in Taiwan,” said George Tang, Chairman & CEO of George Tang Industrial Corporation, a manufacturer and exporter of mobile digital video recorder.

In Brazil, theft by passengers or drivers on buses is rampant. The authorities began addressing this problem with an onboard V8 system and a person dedicated to finding evidence from the footage downloaded each day. The solution was not enough in terms of efficiency, prompting the need for more updated surveillance technology--be it an analog or network system. By deploying the standard 30-day recording and analytic software, finding those who engaged in crimes can now be easily isolated.

The need to manage drivers propels the need for analytic software, which helps to isolate those who frequently talk on the phone, speed, or break suddenly. This function is also widely embraced by insurance companies in the U.S. to raise premiums for dangerous drivers.

For school buses, the integration of video, RFID, and other functions helps to monitor interactions between the students, bus, and driver; however, police cars need automatic surveillance when the siren is sounded.

Tang noted that “users should go for the solution that is ‘enough' for their needs, but not blindly choosing the ‘most advanced one out in the market.' Megapixel is the trend; but do keep in mind that higher resolution means higher storage capacity needed, and larger bandwidth and computing power for playback.”
