The original monorail project was initiated by former Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso in 2004, but it was put hold due to a lack of funding. The project is now back on track, after system operator Jakarta Monorail signed an agreement with China Communication Construction that will finance and spearhead the entire project.

Estimated to cost US$1.5 billion, the elevated monorail will consist of two lines. The first is a circular one 14.3 kilometers in length, connecting Jakarta's business center, Kuningan, to Palmerah in the west of Jakarta. The 13.7-kilometer second line will run from Kampung Melayu in the east to Central Park Mall in the west. The construction is expected to be completed within three years and will carry 300,000 passengers annually starting 2016.

The system will encompass 200 train cars made in and provided by China; a similar system is in use in Chongqing, China with a proven track record. The two companies also agreed to set up a plant for the assembly and maintenance of the train cars.
