Wyze Labs unveils full-featured home security camera for only US$20

Wyze Labs, a Seattle-based startup founded by Amazon’s former employees, has introduced its first product – a home security camera costing only US$20.

“The smart home camera market is crowded, but mainly dominated by deep pockets and companies forgetting that users have a real need,” said Dave Crosby, co-founder of Wyze Labs.

The WyzeCam is designed as a white tiny plastic cube with a magnetic stand that can be mounted to metal surfaces easily. Although it looks small and simple, the camera offers most features similar products in the market provide.

It features 1080p full HD video quality, night vision up to 30 feet, two-way audio, motion and sound detection, and a 110-degree wide angle camera. As for the software, it offers smart sound recognition which can differentiate sound patterns of smoke alarms and CO monitors in order to notify users on specific emergencies.

The company even provides 14-day cloud storage for free. Whenever motions or sounds are detected, the camera will take a 10-15 second video and automatically save it in the cloud. Videos are protected by end-to-end encryption in the AWS Cloud.

Although it lacks features like being weatherproof and battery powered, the price tag with all the other features still makes it a great bargain.

Like other security cameras, the WyzeCam is controlled via a mobile app for further setups and real-time video footages. Considering its price, it is possible for homeowners to install multiple cameras at home without incurring high costs.

Having worked with the e-commerce giant, Wyze Labs employees want to launch products that consumers are really looking for – functional and affordable smart home products.

“We believe smart home cameras shouldn’t break your budget,” said Dongsheng Song, COO and co-founder of Wyze Labs, in a statement. “We work relentlessly to cut down costs while maintaining the highest quality standards possible; and we keep our margins low.”

The WyzeCam is now available on the company’s website and on Amazon.com.
