Evolis printers chosen to streamline French university smart cards services

Evolis printers chosen to streamline French university smart cards services
Student smart cards giving access to an entire range of university services have become the standard in colleges around the world. France is no exception.
Student smart cards giving access to an entire range of university services have become the standard in colleges around the world. France is no exception. It's vital for educational institutions to update student chip cards easily and make sure they are protected and secure. Monecarte, the French payment and identification solutions company, provided over 50 universities in France and around the world with Evolis card printers and interactive terminals to meet this need. Today, those institutions can autonomously create, issue and update highly secured smart cards.

Technology

Monecarte chose Evolis Zenius and Primacy card printers for a range of configuration options: double-sided printing, encoding of magnetic strips, contact chips and contactless cards (using RFID and NFC technologies). The printers are connected to the card editing station, which in turn connects to Uni'Campus to create personalized cards. The Uni'Campus terminal is an integrated hardware and software solution. In this set-up, the Evolis printer is configured specifically for the Uni'Campus cards, with encoding by IP address to update data on the contact or contactless chips, with encoding by IP address to update data on the contact or contactless chips, as well as authentication and data encryption via a secure access module (SAM) to enhance payment security. Since the solution has an ethernet port with a USB/IP converter, users can print/ configure directly from the Uni'Campus website, bypassing the need for a USB connection. The solution is ready to operate (no additional drivers required) and need not be installed next to a computer. College admissions offices in Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Nice, Grenoble or Brussels need no further convincing that converging services creates added value. By providing students with a single card that covers attendance records, access to facilities and micropayments, university services are delivered smoothly and efficiently.

Uni'Campus is the online platform for universities to access all the modules needed for this turnkey and easy-to-use solution.

On-site card personalization

Uni'Campus is connected with the university's identification databases to provide comprehensive and secure card management from issue to deactivation. Personalized cards are produced by an Evolis card printer connected to the card editing station. In some institutions, holders update the cards themselves — freeing up valuable time for campus administrative staff. The Uni'Campus interactive terminals, which, of course, are not limited to office hours, update the cardholder's information (student, professor, admin. staff, etc.) and encode them on the smart chip. 500 Evolis systems are currently installed in universities across France. One million cards are in circulation.

More security and efficiency for the University of Angers

Prior to 2014, the University of Angers in Maine-et-Loire (France) had a variety of different systems to control access to its facilities and parking lots. Today, the Pass’Sup multiservice card developed with Monecarte has streamlined access control and reduced the university’s operating costs. A major benefit of the single centralized system is tighter security: access rights can be disabled immediately if a card is lost or an employee leaves. The card solution is open and additional functions can be added through the university IT system’s interface.
