St. Louis Community College smartens up security with Bosch's integrated system

St. Louis Community College smartens up security with Bosch's integrated system
Moving from a mix of cameras from different manufacturers, the college chose to standardize on Bosch cameras and implement Milestone XProtect video management software due to its ability to integrate with the cameras as well as a third-party access control system from Genea.
St. Louis Community College (STLCC) has served more than 1.3 million students since 1962. With four campuses and two education centers, STLCC is located strategically across the region. The college is committed to creating accessible education for every resident in its 718-square-mile district.

Standardized system across locations

With a mission to provide a safe college community environment that promotes the nurturing of student success and achievement, STLCC recently sought to upgrade its video surveillance system. Moving from a mix of cameras from different manufacturers, the college chose to standardize on Bosch cameras and implement Milestone XProtect video management software due to its ability to integrate with the cameras as well as a third-party access control system from Genea.

Now, 475 Bosch cameras are installed throughout the campuses and education centers to enhance the security and safety of the locations.

Utilizing FLEXIDOME multi 7000i cameras has helped the college to improve coverage while reducing licensing costs. The cameras each feature four image sensors and are installed on exterior building corners and in interior hallway intersections. They provide coverage along both sides of the buildings and each hallway with just one camera and one license per camera. In addition, FLEXIDOME panoramic 5100i cameras provide 180- or 360-degree coverage in select areas.

The college also utilizes FLEXIDOME IP 8000i fixed dome cameras with remote commissioning capabilities. They enable the IT department to position the cameras remotely – to pan, tilt, roll, and zoom to the desired field of view prior to locking the camera in place – all without requiring staff on a ladder to access the cameras, improving efficiency.

In restricted locations, such as at loading docks, MIC IP starlight 7100i moving cameras with white light illuminators provide enhanced security. The cameras’ built-in Intelligent Video Analytics alert the police dispatch office if a person or vehicle enters the restricted area after hours. Simultaneously, the video analytics triggers the camera’s white light illuminator to turn on and video to be recorded. It also initiates the camera’s tracking capabilities. The camera with the white light illumination tracks the person or vehicle as it moves throughout the area to deter theft or damage.

Increased efficiency for IT staff and users

Utilizing the Bosch Remote Portal, which provides cloud-based connectivity to Bosch video security devices for remote administration and maintenance, the college can upgrade the firmware for multiple cameras installed across the college from a single location.

With the portal, St. Louis Community College IT staff can upgrade multiple cameras with a few clicks of a mouse, rather than having to do each camera individually. The new cameras also provide better clarity than those previously installed. Campus police can see people on campus with high-quality detail. However, for the IT team, the biggest benefit is being standardized on a single solution that integrates the cameras with Milestone XProtect and the college’s access control system.

The integrated system helps to further increase efficiency for users. For example, with cameras pointed at select doors, campus police can see the person requesting access to a location from the police dispatch station. They simply press a button to provide access, whereas they previously had to drive to the location to unlock the door when access was requested.

Overall, the upgraded security system assists the campus police staff by providing better coverage of locations, improving response times, and helping to support students by creating a safer campus environment.
