Underwater drones for border security and more

Underwater drones for border security and more
As issues like terrorism increase global security concerns, more and more innovative solutions are being used to protect people and resources. One such solution is underwater drones, which are being used by security forces to ensure border safety.
As issues like terrorism increase global security concerns, more and more innovative solutions are being used to protect people and resources. One such solution is underwater drones, which are being used by security forces to ensure border safety.

Deep Trekker is an Ontario, Canada-based company that makes such drones. Their products are currently being used in over 70 countries for various purposes including security and infrastructure inspection. Speaking to asmag.com, Amanda Coulas, Marketing Manager of Deep Trekker explained why the solution is popular.

“Terrorism has increased our military and police presence,” Coulas said. “Many border security teams now include a Deep Trekker underwater drone to inspect the hull of ships as they enter new ports to ensure no contraband or explosives are hidden under the vessel.”

Deep Trekker’s underwater drones are completely portable with built-in batteries that allow about 6-8 hours of continuous activity with a 1.5 hours charge. They come with a patented pitching system that allows exceptional maneuvering capabilities. Using only two thrusters, the drone can swim left, right, forward, and backward. By rotating its outer frame, it can make vertical movements.

All this come along with an internal camera and light that can rotate 270 degrees for quick sweeps of large areas.

Beyond Security

It’s not just security purposes that these drones serve. Commercially, they are deployed in industries such as aquaculture, offshore energy, onshore energy, commercial diving, education, police search & rescue, military, shipping, etc. Outside the commercial segment, they are also used by recreational boaters, fishermen, and divers.

Deep Trekker offers a cost-efficient way to inspect underwater infrastructure. This has become particularly relevant with offshore structures after the recent dip in oil prices.

“Aging infrastructure greatly influences the need to increase underwater inspection in an economical way,” Coulas said. “The recent downturn in oil prices also has companies searching for more economical ways to inspect their offshore infrastructure.”

Expect strong demand in Asia, Europe

The company expects to see more demand from Asia where there are increasing numbers of aquaculture sites. The submerged infrastructure in the continent is also aging and will require regular inspection.

“Secondly, in Europe, we are seeing more demand from the energy and shipping industries,” Coulas said. “In Europe, there are many new offshore energy projects being put into place, where Deep Trekker underwater drones are being used to scope out new sites, monitor installation and perform inspections.”

The shipping industry is rapidly expanding with increased movement of vessels across international waters. This and rising security concerns could increase demand for these drones in the security industry.
