Turkey improves border surveillance neighboring Iran
As one of the major Middle East checkpoints bordering Iran, the Gurbulak Border Checkpoint, located in the Agri province in eastern Turkey recently underwent a major upgrade to a comprehensive IP-based video surveillance to improve border surveillance efficiency at the more than 160 decares checkpoint. Istanbul-based Biges Technology, the system integrator for the project, deployed Surveon network cameras, RAID NVR, VCA, and enterprise VMS with up to 448 TB storage for 120 days of continuous surveillance for the project.

To ease customs and prevent illegal trade along the border, the Turkish government has spent a lot of resources on man power for surveillance at the only border entrance into Iran. The government was eager to adopt a more efficient method using the advanced megapixel surveillance of the checkpoint that constiutes a land area of 160 decares, 18.53 acres (75,000 square meters) of wide road and park space, and 3.95 acres of closed space.

Megapixel camera models including 3-megapixel D/N cameras, HD vandal proof domes and autofocus PTZ speed domes installed in key locations to monitor the areas where hundreds of people and vehicles enter and exit. Ranged from two to five megapixel, the cameras are equipped with Sony Exmor sensors that provide 10 times clearer images than conventional analog cameras. All devices are built with industrial grade components, which lead to reliable solutions that reduce maintenance cost. The iSCSI-based RAID NVR deployed offers up to 64-channel megapixel recording, and provides scalable architecture which brings lower maintenance effort, fewer required hard disks and lower cost.

The scalable enterprise VMS is built with client-server architecture and adopts central management style. Its active video intelligence detection function has a pre-configured base for a number of scenarios, such as intrusion detection at and around the checkpoint, examination of important gates and detection in the park areas. The recorded events are analyzed and labeled with details such as time, date, direction, color and size of the objects. Surveon's clustered video storage solutions come with the SANwatch storage monitoring suite, which helps prevent data loss.

“Surveon uses 3-year warranty industry-grade components instead of conventional consumer-based components,” said Fatih Kilic of Biges Technologies, the Security PM of Gurbulak Border Checkpoint. “These have resulted in great improvement on product quality and indeed saved massive management cost for us.”
