Experiencing tremendous growth in the retail segments in Asia, demand for security solutions have similarly also expanded. As Rio Mao, Sales Director of APAC at Dahua Technology explained, “The retail market has been going up in recent years, as more new shops and supermarkets are being opened in Asia. Shop owners have come to realize that video surveillance systems can prevent crime and theft. In addition, it can also help them with increasing efficiency by better arranging manpower according to people flow or queuing.”

Expanding on some of the trends being seen in the Asian retail markets, Mao further explained that ease of use combined with affordable costs are still ideal, and value-added additions for video surveillance solutions such as integrated systems and intelligent functions like people counting or auto-tracking continue to pave the road for the expanding industry. He further added, “As retail is estimated to be the largest end-user sector in the video surveillance market, and with private shops blending into the consumer market, they are looking for cameras with multiple functions and easy operation at a good price.”

Taking a deeper look at the differentials that separate high-end retail markets and more traditional big box market segments, Mao explained that High-end luxury retailers will take privacy into a higher priority, and intelligent video will also be helpful. “Luxury shops will take traditional functions such as theft prevention and commercial uses like VMS as well as respect of privacy into consideration. They prefer well-designed and reliable, quality products.” When talking about big box retailers like supermarkets, Mao noted that they usually put anti-theft at the top of the list, with functions like people counting that may be welcomed.
