Penang opened a new tender for affordable housing at Sandiland Foreshore, a year after cancelling the previous request for proposal (RFP).

The new project will be built on 4.23 acres (1.71 hectares) of land along Jalan CY Choy, just 1.8km from Weld Quay, on the fringe of the city's Unesco heritage zone.

“The development at Sandiland Foreshore, which is near the heritage zone, is one of the pockets of sustainable and viable development that will complement the nearby Komtar tower upgrading and revitalization programme,” Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng told a news conference here.

The project comprises 482 units of medium cost apartments priced below US$124,700, 321 low medium costs flats priced below $22,600. It includes a commercial component consisting of service apartments, business suites, medical suites and small home office units.

The state has appointed the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) to develop the project.

The winner of the new tender will enter into a joint development agreement with PDC and the land is on a 99-year leasehold term.

The RFP opens on July 22 and closing date for submission is September 3.

Previously, the state had launched and implemented two other affordable housing projects, one at SP Chelliah, also in George Town, and another at Batu Kawan on the mainland.
