[Video] a&s International #215: 2016 Security 50
To celebrate the announcement of 2016’s Security 50 ranking, a&s has published a series of web articles to analyze the security market and how it has impacted the annual rankings.

In the past few years, security manufacturers have encountered many a challenge due to price competition, which has pushed manufacturers to test their flexibility to meet customer demands. With the universal issue of price reduction, the revenue for physical security equipment has fallen, backed by the high demand previously from terrorist threats and the global economy. For instance, the average global price of a network camera was US$500 back in 2010, and has fallen to less than $130 in 2015, according to IHS Markit Technology.

Furthermore, price competition has accelerated industry consolidation, with various mergers and acquisitions that can be seen recently, for example the Bosch and Sony business partnership.

In access control, the industry has experience accelerated growth, thanks to end-user migration from mechanical to electronic access control, as well as multiple new technical innovations. The trend has moved to combining technologies to one solution in order to help customers to solve various requirements.

This year’s ranking welcomes some new comers, including ACTi, Digital Barriers, AxxonSoft, Costar Technologies and Identiv. One thing that these companies have in common is their ability to make a name for themselves in niche markets and applications.
