ICx Technologies, announced that it has completed the initial portion of the radiation detection testing as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) International Commercial Aviation Passenger and Baggage (Pax/Bag) Pilot program. As part of this field test, multiple detection units were installed at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which has been experiencing high volumes of traffic to Vancouver, to monitor passengers and carry-on luggage for the presence of illicit radioactive material.

The covert movement of special nuclear materials or weapons into populated areas represents a great potential threat. In addition to traditional detection capabilities, the detection systems can effectively identify, classify and track the movement of radioactive sources within the area the units are installed. As part of the field test, the systems were installed along both passenger and carry-on luggage pathways within international terminals, providing detection and identification of isotopes.

The solution provides complete "out-of-the-box" radiation detection, identification and localization functionality and can be easily tailored to diverse, unique security requirements. The systems have been designed to be deployed either openly or covertly, depending upon the screening scenario. In addition, ICx has other technologies currently being used at airports for passenger and carry-on luggage screening, including handheld liquids screener and handheld radiation detector.
