Speaking at a presentation on residential security organized by the British Chamber of Commerce, panel member and PCS Residential Safety and Security specialist Steve Woodward emphasized the importance of implementing an integrated physical and technical approach in minimizing security threats.

In a focused and authoritative presentation at the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit in Bangkok, Woodward reminded the audience that deliberate threats can only be realized if intention and capability are present, and opportunity exists. The main objectiveshould be to remove or minimize the opportunity factor.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility and in the residential environment, the best security device can be neighbor. In terms of an overall approach it has to be one that is technically and physically integrated and takes account of commonsense measures to reduce the threat of opportunistic crime, such as ensuring tools and equipment for example, are not left unsecured,” Woodward said. He also drew attention to the fact that the current number of security officers in Thailand is around 400,000, representing an estimated 10-percent shortfall with little chance of improvement in the near future, making the need for an integrated approach even more relevant.

The PCS presentation also discussed the concept of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) which seeks to reduce the incidence and fear of crime through effective environmental design. Ideally implemented at the design stage, existing structures can be adapted in line with this principle which features the physical guidance of people coming and going from a space by the judicial placement of entrances, exits, fencing, landscaping and lighting.

CPTED also allows for the continued use of a space for its intended purpose and serves as an additional expression of ownership. CPTED is concerned with vigilant management that can reduce crime opportunity and sustain territorial integrity.
