Integrated Access Control Protects Shanghai Metro

The Shanghai Metro installed an integrated TDSi access control solution for Lines 6 and 9. TDSi is also installing systems for the newest Line 7, with service to the World Expo site.

Shanghai Metro is one of the newest and fastest growing rapid transit systems in the world, with 162 stations and more than 225 kilometers of track running both above and underground.

Over two million passengers use the system every day, with future expansion set to increase to ridership to three million. The latest addition to the network, Line 7, opened in 2008. It connects the Baoshan District with the city center and Pudong District. It also provided a vital link to the World Expo site.

TDSi and ZDX, a distributor for TDSi in China, have developed and supplied integrated access control solutions for Lines 6 and 9 over the last three years. Each line serves more than 40 stations and have their own Operational Control Center (OCC), with around 2,000 doors secured and controlled by TDSi's systems on each line.

“The Shanghai Me t roisa high profile infrastructure program, representing one of the largest access control projects across China,” said John Davies, MD of TDSi. “With two lines in operation for over a year, we were delighted to be awarded the contract for Line 7, a demonstration of the performance and quality of our systems.”

Solution
The access control solution featured TDSi's controllers, enterprise software platform and Mifare smart card readers. Specified for its performance in high capacity applications, the solution delivered a fully featured and networkable system.

Each controller has a capacity of up to 48,000 cards and provides fast and effective
access control to projects such as the Shanghai Metro, which has consistently high volumes of users passing through multiple access points.

The OCC and each station's controllers are programmed by TDSi's access management software. Each station is capable of operating independently of the server in case communication is lost — a key requirement in the specification for this project.

Result
Featuring database replication for disaster recovery capabilities and total peace of mind, the management platform allows all real-time events and system parameters to be stored both at the main server in the local OCC and each individual station.

If communication is lost between the center and individual stations, changes and events are stored at the local stations until communication to the main server is reestablished.

The software platform allows the system to be managed centrally, even where the wide area network may be of variable quality, removing the risk of single point failure.

TDSi Mifare smart card readers are employed throughout each line, providing contactless technology. The readers provided a cost-effective and reliable solution that allow for future expansion. For example, the same access control card could be used for cashless vending and car park management, offering users a true one-card solution.
