Top outdoor security camera trends seen in 2022

Top outdoor security camera trends seen in 2022
Outdoor security cameras for perimeter protection are an important segment for security systems integrators and their customers.
Perimeter protection has always been a concern for security service providers. Depending on the size and nature of the site that you are trying to protect, there would be numerous variables at any given point in time. Over the years, people have used different solutions to protect perimeters, from simple fences to sophisticated sensors.

Outdoor security cameras for perimeter security have seen an increase in demand especially after the pandemic set in, as manning many sites became difficult. With the increased prevalence of analytics and better integration, they provide more value to customers than ever before.

Asmag.com recently spoke to Vijay Dhamija, Global Video Engineering Leader at Honeywell Building Technologies, to understand the latest trends in outdoor security cameras at the moment and what customers should consider when selecting devices for their projects.

What’s trending?

Software has started playing an integral role in many areas, often overtaking the benefits of hardware alone. Cameras are no longer passive recording machines, thanks to real-time analytics that can understand what happens in front of it and alert the right people. This has become even more accessible to customers now than before due to the popularity of cloud-based applications.

“We will likely continue to see increased traction with artificial intelligence (AI) based video analytics for perimeter protection,” Dhamija said. “Customers strongly favor solutions that offer cloud-connected devices with remote management capabilities. We’re seeing cloud adoption becoming a much easier sell for clients; more building managers are ready to migrate to the cloud because it lets them remotely manage their video infrastructure.”

Dhamija added that more customers now want the autonomy to access video footage and respond to alarms at any time from any location. Customers also look for multi-sensor cameras with up to 360-degree coverage and encryption in the SD card and video stream.

How has the market demand evolved?

As many more people continue to shift their work styles, whether fully remote, in the office, or in a hybrid model, security teams need to be more flexible and have the ability to adjust quickly if required.

“Customers want to do more with their existing systems, as well as making sure they are up to date on the latest standards, including NDAA compliance for many,” Dhamija. “Specifically, we have seen customers looking for higher entry resolution from 2MP to 4MP/5MP, as well as more 4K resolution requirements and an increasing demand for thermal cameras for perimeter protection usage.”

Customers are increasingly exploring options to integrate more sensors with their video surveillance security systems. For instance, radars and LiDAR technologies are receiving more attention than before. Integrating them to operate seamlessly is crucial as more solutions enter the market.

Dhamija pointed out that working with the right partner is important to build the best solution that can evolve with your changing needs and fit within your budget and staffing coverage. A critical factor to consider is the long-term feasibility of your solution. Many businesses may scale up or make changes that impact the infrastructure. Having a solution that remains flexible to your changes is essential.

There are many factors to consider when selecting an outdoor security camera and system. Here are a few to keep in mind:

  1. Field of view (FOV) and camera resolution selection based on monitor area coverage
  2. Infrared (IR) distance and low light performance based on the night light condition
  3. Camera form fact selection on the dome/bullet/PTZ with mount bracket based on the installation location
  4. Power source selection of 12VDC/24VAC/POE/Solar
  5. Camera uplink network selection of Cat5/6, 4G/5G, WiFi
  6. Camera environment protection: IP66/67, working temperature low/high, corrosion protection
  7. Video analytics feature, temper detection, motion detection, intrusion detection, etc.

Conclusion

Outdoor security cameras for perimeter protection are an important segment for security systems integrators and their customers. Incorporating the latest technologies, especially video analytics and intelligent sensors, is crucial now. Working with a partner who can think of your long-term requirements is also essential.
