Hanwha Techwin supports APAC road to recovery with end-to-end AI solutions

Hanwha Techwin supports APAC road to recovery with end-to-end AI solutions
The APAC market has been greatly impacted by the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, technology has emerged as an important enabler for business continuity and health protection. This month's Insights story features James Hong, Head of APAC Sales for Hanwha Techwin, who explains how end-to-end AI solutions can aid the market in its road to recovery.

While markets in the APAC economy start to slowly move towards recovery with the help of strict public health precautionary measures and the gradual introduction of vaccines, concerns over potential contagion risk in public spaces still remain at large. Daily commutes, running errands and simply venturing out to enjoy life are all acts that can pose a risk of exposure to the unseen virus. This risk is not only a concern to health officials and facility administrators, but also to merchants, restaurateurs and the general public attempting to seek a sense of normalcy amid the pandemic.

Since the outset of the outbreak, technology has played a critical role in supporting efforts to keep businesses viable. In the year ahead, we expect this adoption to gain even more momentum in APAC, in the form of AI thermal imaging cameras measuring body temperatures to diverse systems for social distancing and quarantine efforts.

Moving into the new normal: Co-existing with the pandemic

Advanced surveillance technology has clearly become a valuable tool that has helped governments and the private sector deal with precautionary measures set in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. However, as new threats and challenges arise, existing thermal detection technology and contact tracing practices need to be continuously re-examined and enhanced by innovation.

Economic recovery has been a challenge for regulators, government officials and the private sector due to the ongoing pandemic and limitations of the progressively contactless business environment. As such, in 2021, we aim to offer the market more options to meet these challenges as well as address vertical-specific demands and tailored features that the industry needs.

To do this, Hanwha Techwin has been working with diverse partners on an open platform, promoting proactive collaboration to create optimized solutions. We have stepped up in partnering with local companies in APAC to develop solutions that can aid organizations during the pandemic and post-pandemic. This includes better integration with even more third-party systems for access control, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), parking solutions, traffic monitoring and video analytics. Our AI-based Wisenet cameras have already been deployed in large malls across Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, with the built-in face mask detection and occupancy monitoring applications alerting security personnel for quick on-site response, making them efficient monitoring solutions.

Through this, we hope to play our part in restoring the general public’s confidence to resume business and life normalcy using technology innovations provided by the surveillance industry.

Perfect fit for public & private spaces helping to comply with social distancing

AI cameras have an integral role to play in end-to-end pandemic solutions, particularly for indoor spaces such as retail stores, shopping malls, government buildings, and office complexes. The right features are key for high-resolution wide-area monitoring and for organizations to use these as COVID-19 threat deterrents by counting the number of people entering or leaving a building.

Real-time information from these occupancy monitoring applications can help eliminate human errors in managing the density of occupancy in the premises, helping to enforce physical distancing. The use of total AI solutions offers organizations other advantages, such as savings on labor costs by not having to deploy staff at every point, and more importantly, better protection against potential exposure from the virus for themselves and their employees.

The retail and hospitality sector can stand to benefit from this as well, such as in the case of shop owners and restaurant managers implementing social distancing guidelines. Hanwha Techwin AI cameras have a built-in application that generates an alarm when the maximum permitted number of people has been reached, displaying a ‘wait’ or ‘enter’ text message on the monitors installed at the entry point. Not only does this minimizes effort, it frees up the staff to focus on other more important tasks, thus increasing work efficiency.

Automated detection to aid on-site personnel and control centers

Large indoor spaces such as skyscrapers, office buildings and shopping malls with high foot traffic can become high-risk areas during the pandemic. Smart edge cameras and thermal sensors can help the staff identify potential health breaches like mask spoofing or abnormally high temperatures.

We also see these types of solutions relieving the burden of operators in command centers and control rooms as well. When AI technology is used on the NVR and VMS server level, operators can program automated alerts for specific types of people along with searches for events and objects via defined attributes such as age, gender and clothing. The further application of advanced AI algorithms can allow filtering of the metadata for forensic purposes. Yet these features should only be made available on a cyber secure server software that systematically maintains a strict chain of custody for the highly sensitive data, protecting it from unauthorized access.

The next level in cybersecurity for AI solutions

As security surveillance systems become more advanced, connected and universally available, our data becomes more valuable and vulnerable at the same time. With the incidence of cyberattacks on metadata from edge-based systems drastically increasing as well, it has become important to make both data protection and individual data privacy key priorities for the industry moving forward.

Hanwha Techwin has a team of professionals dedicated to ensuring our compliance with government cybersecurity policies, and the latest countermeasures to maintain system protection and data integrity. We also have our own device certificate system that offers a robust cybersecurity policy with secure OS, secure booting, signed firmware and more.

In 2020, Hanwha Techwin received the UL CAP (Cybersecurity Assurance Program) certification for our Wisenet7 SoC-equipped cameras by meeting the requirement criteria for penetration test, access control and software update. It is our aim to continue providing our customers with end-to-end cybersecurity with high levels of protection to address the unique challenges of the security market.
