Security robots are increasingly being seen as an adequate replacement for human guards. In a bid to take advantage of this trend, the Singapore-based Ademco Security Group is launching Robot as a Service.

Speaking to asmag.com on the project, Patrick Lim, Group Sales and Marketing Director at the company, said that they have created a platform to provide service to those customers who are looking for robotic assistance and do not want to run into the hassles of managing a server.

“We created this managed services platform, that is able to provide various services like analytics, communication, alarm verification etc. all on the cloud-based platform and all on a cloud platform,” Lim said. “We believe that with the advancements in robotic technology, we feel that we could actually apply our managed services on site. In the past you probably had a camera that would offer analytics, now we can get a robot to manage the place and provide analytics.”

Giving a perspective on the matter, Lim added that in several developed economies, customers are demanding high quality security service. Such high quality cannot be provided by human guards and hence the rising demand for robots.

“The traditional security guards have been burdened with too many tasks, which are at times strenuous and at times mundane that takes up much of their time. Hence the price of high quality security guards is increasing very fast. For example, in Singapore, there is a huge shortage of security guards. The market itself doesn't have enough security guards. Hence robots are becoming a natural alternative.”

However, robotics is still expensive. To most customers, robots are still very new so there is no history of purchasing such a big ticket item even if they feel strongly that it is an inevitable investment. It is for this reason that Ademco is bringing Robot as a Service.

The company is working with several robot companies for this service. The most common would be a land-based robot, although the company plans to launch water-based and aerial robots as well. One of the companies that Ademco is working with is SMP Robotics. The service is mainly focused on Singapore, but Ademco is also seeing demand in other parts of Asia.
