Bali Hotels Association (BHA) calls for more efficient certification for hotel quality and security standards to simplify the current complicated process.

Djinaldi Gosana, BHA executive director, strongly criticized government policies as burdensome to the hotel industry.

“One of the most complicated procedures is hotel security standard certification,” Gosana said.

The government, he said, had never provided any incentive for hotels to obtain the security certification.

“Hotels that do not comply with the government's security standards are still allowed to operate and to receive guests. Even during international events, like the APEC Summit last November, the uncertified hotels were still allowed to host international delegates,” Gosana said.

He further suggested that the separate government certification for hotel security standards be integrated into the hotel classification process, as this also covered the assessment of security measures.

“Currently, to undertake the security certification process, a hotel has to pay US$701. This does not give any guarantee that the hotel will pass,” Gosana added.

M. Nawir Messi, chairman of the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), agreed with Gosana, saying certification in the hotel industry must be simplified.

“There are so many government- and association-issued certifications for hotels, which leads to high operational costs,” Messi said.

He stated that all parties in the tourist and hotel industries must improve their standards of competency, security and quality in the face of the upcoming integrated 2015 ASEAN Economic Community, which would be highly competitive.
