Japan has offered Malaysia its high-speed train technology for the proposed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The offer was made by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe when he met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today ahead of a special summit between Tokyo and Asean.

"For the high-speed rail that will link Malaysia and Singapore, I strongly requested (Malaysia) to choose Shinkansen technology," Abe said in a joint press statement with Najib. Abe seeks to boost Japan's infrastructure exports.

Saying that both of them had very meaningful talks, Abe said they had agreed to cooperate in the area of economic ties, particularly with regard to the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur high-speed rail link project.

In a tweet today, Najib said the proposed 330km Singapore-Kuala Lumpur high-speed rail link project would be finalised next year. The proposed US$12 billion (RM40 billion) was announced by Najib and Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong in February.
