Located on the coast of Normandy, France, Cherbourg Airport was founded in 1960. It is managed by the Canadian engineering firm SNC-Lavalin.

Requirements
According to new civil security obligations enforced by European legislation in 2015, airports which are near either a military base or nuclear power station are required to install access control to secure the site. Cherbourg Airport is situated in close proximity to a naval base that builds submarines and a new European pressurized reactor at Flamanville, which requires the airport to adhere to these new legislations.

Pascal Marcouz, Operations Manager at Cherbourg Airport said, “As a result of the new legislation, we have an obligation to monitor the access between the public side and the airport runway.” Cherbourg Airport needed an access control system that would secure and control the movement of people in the airport.

Solution
Cherbourg Airport chose installation company Actemium Cherbourg, formerly CGEE ALSTHOM, established in 1892 by the Alsthom brothers, for the job. Jean-Marie Mouchel was responsible for the installation, and said, “This is the first installation that we have done with Paxton. The airport wanted to have a simple and secure management system that was easily scalable. Net2 suited perfectly.”

Net2 is a user-friendly and flexible networked access control system, designed to make the management of any building straightforward. Easy to use and with a range of features, it moves beyond the basics of controlling the flow of people around a building, offering benefits such as building control and system integration. The Net2 system is easily scalable making it perfectly suited to an expanding site like Cherbourg Airport that is planning further development in the future.

Result
The key requirement was to fulfil the airport’s obligation to conform to the new EU civil security obligations enforced by the local police authorities to closely monitor access between the border of the city and the airport runway. Actemium Cherbourg used Paxton’s P50 readers on all external doors along with the Net2 software, the installation was quick and the users were ready to go after just a few days. Jean-Marie said, “It was extremely easy to propose but also to advise the customer on. The installation was made pretty quickly within a few days including the cable passages and a few hours to program the software and enrol the tokens.”

The airport were pleased with the result Pascal said, "Extremely fun and easy to remember. I got the hang of it in under two days."
