Demand for 'smart' cameras to rise, says edge camera startup

Rising global security concerns will boost the need for surveillance cameras but monitoring large numbers of feeds could be a challenge for security agencies. In this context, there would be an increased demand for cameras that are “smart”, says Auglle, a recent entrant to the security market.

“We expect the demand for security cameras to grow exponentially as the world tries to figure out ways to prevent terrorist threats,” said James McVey, President of Auglle.  “The demand for cameras is growing but there is still an issue related to who will watch all the video. There will be a huge demand in security cameras that are “smart” and that can help alleviate the need for additional personnel.”

Auglle provides edge-based surveillance solution that is designed to provide preventative alerts to security personnel so that proactive measures can be taken before any untoward incident. It works by using high-end analytics software and storage capabilities to provide alert notifications that can be monitored and reviewed.

The company believes its solution is best suited for customers looking to secure outdoor areas that have concerns related to network, size, bandwidth concerns, or costs associated with trenching cables.

But the security industry is already crowded with several kinds of camera manufacturers vying for market share. What would a new entrant be looking to accomplish?

“We are not looking to replace any security cameras in the market,” McVey explained. “We are looking to enhance the market by providing a solution that will compliment other systems. Our camera is a complete edge-based solution designed to work as a stand-alone system or to compliment any other solution that is ONVIF compliant. Our system provides an all-inclusive, plug & play solution inclusive of NVR, storage and real-time alert capabilities all working at the edge.”

He added that there is a niche market in outdoor security that is currently not being targeted.

“The market is getting pushed towards cheaper cameras that provide little more functionality,” he continued. “We wanted to tap the market that was looking for solutions that are not driven so much on pricing but more on functionality. The market is being pushed towards higher resolution and cloud storage. But, until the cost comes down on cloud storage along with the cost associated with transmitting high-resolution video, these new technologies will not be able to grow.”
