Initiated in Germany, the Industry 4.0 concept describing the computerization of manufacturing, has swept the globe, driving factory upgrades around the world. To realize the “industry 4.0 concept” in a manufacturing factory, multiple connected automated systems, with machine vision, sensors, and industrial cameras now are adopted.

Benefits of machine vision
In the past, a majority of product testing was done through manual operations, which often led to complications due to human error, working time, complexity of the product, and considerable discrepancy. After the introduction of machine vision systems and industrial cameras, it has become easier to detect substandard product quality through visual analysis and image positioning measurement inspection, which allows for immediate judgement calls. This process enhances the level of automation and accuracy while reducing labor costs.

Four major characteristics of an industrial camera:
An industrial camera usually consists of two basic components: the image sensor and the digital data transmission interface, wherein there are three main transmission types: USB 2.0/3.0, FireWire, and GigE.
  1. Video format of more than 640 x 480 pixel resolution, and at 30 fps
  2. The majority of industrial cameras use CCD sensors, which offer high sensitivity and a low noise level. Additionally, CCD sensors for industrial cameras are characterized by three other important features: a global shutter, available in monochrome and color versions, and the sensors are available for many years to come. However, more and more CMOS image sensors are used in industrial cameras. Due to their low price, they support the trend to lower the cost of machine vision applications. However, the rolling shutter of most CMOS sensors limits the range of applications.
  3. Industrial cameras do not have image processing units. Instead, digital sensors mainly convert physical or chemical properties (temperature, acidity, etc.) into a digital signal. They do not analyze, process or evaluate the property – they only convert is as precisely as possible. Therefore, industrial cameras do not have to enhance the images. Similarly, compressed images should be avoided for machine vision purposes.
  4. All industrial camera parameters (exposure time, gain, etc.) should be manually controlled by the user.
