Morpho (Safran), through its subsidiary Morpho Detection, announced that its local partner, MicroSegur, was awarded a contract by Portugal airports operator Vinci/ANA Aeroportos de Portugal to supply and service 74 Itemiser 4DX explosives trace detectors (ETD).

Following competitive testing closely supported by MicroSegur, the explosive trace detector was selected to meet the requirements of the new EU legislation for enhanced explosives screening of passengers at five airports throughout Portugal. Building on 15 years of Itemiser systems protecting travellers at leading global aviation hubs, Itemiser 4DX quickly detects and identifies trace amounts of explosives on skin, clothing, carried items, bags, vehicles and other surfaces.

"Growing airport operators like Vinci/ANA Aeroportos de Portugal depend on stability and reliable detection solutions to quickly screen passengers and Morpho is thrilled they have selected Itemiser 4DX," said Karen Bomba, President and CEO, Morpho Detection. "The detection capabilities of Itemiser 4DX, combined with rapid response and maintenance services provided by local partners including MicroSegur in Portugal, has created an unmatched, end-to-end industry solution."

The Itemiser 4DX eliminates the administrative, regulatory, storage and shipping requirements associated with a radiation-emitting trace detection source. By leveraging long-life consumables and internal calibration, it seeks to minimize operational costs for airports and air cargo facilities, law enforcement agencies and government and critical infrastructure installations.

Currently approved for passenger and cargo screening throughout European Civil Aviation Conference's (ECAC) 44 member nations, more than 800 Itemiser 4DX ETD have been shipped to airports throughout Europe. More than 23,000 Morpho ETD systems have been supplied to airports, air cargo facilities, law enforcement agencies and secure locations worldwide.
