Bus passengers and staff face a growing range of threats to their safety and security, from abusive behavior to theft and assault. X-Series IP network cameras by Sony offer transportation operators a powerful deterrent against anti-social behavior, while reassuring occupants with their discreet presence. Delivering crystal-clear Full HD image quality even in low light, they can also provide crucial evidence in the event of on-board incidents.

A safer journey by day or at night
Travel by bus can be an intimidating and even dangerous experience for passengers of any age as well as transport company employees. There's a steadily increasing range of risks to personal safety on board for travelers and staff alike. Verbal and physical threats and intimidation. Pick-pocketing and theft of luggage and personal property. They're all-too frequent situations that no passenger or driver should have to face.

It's a duty of public transport operators to provide an environment that's welcoming for every bus occupant. Video security cameras play a crucial role in making journeys safer by day or night, providing the discreet round-the-clock presence of a watchful eye on board. Equally, effective surveillance plays an important role for bus operators who want to maximize service continuity and safeguard revenues.

For the driver, on-board cameras can help monitor the safe opening and closing of doors when sight-lines are restricted in a packed vehicle during rush-hour. They can also assist vehicle and passenger safety with coverage of blind-spots that are outside the reach of a rear-view mirror.

Back at the main operations centre, real-time data on passenger flows can help bus companies allocate resources more intelligently to meet demand at peak times.

The interior of a moving bus presents further challenges for any video security camera. A wide field of view is needed to ensure every corner of the bus is covered at reasonable cost. Just as importantly, it's vital to capture crisply-detailed images in unpredictable, fast-changing conditions – from dark evenings to sudden direct glare of a low winter sun.

And if that wasn't enough, there's the threat of unwanted tampering by vandals to contend with, together with dust and water splashes during cleaning.

Security for every bus passenger
As a major provider of video security, Sony now makes trip safer for passengers and staff with new X-Series network cameras for use on board buses.

Tough, discreet and easy to install, they're designed for unflinching performance inside the confines of a moving vehicle. The sleek, low profile lines of each mini-dome blend discreetly into their surroundings, while the wide-angle lens means that fewer cameras are needed for complete coverage. Crisp, clear Full HD pictures allows for seeing what's happening – even at night time or in less-than-perfect lighting conditions.

As an extra refinement, a built-in microphone allows operators to monitor everything that's said by the driver. What's more, recorded audio can be presented as additional evidence in cases of criminal prosecution. Attempts to tamper with the camera can automatically send an alarm straight back to a control centre.

Built-in video analytics can provide rule-based alerts from object and face detection– helping operators quickly locate incidents in recorded material, contributing to greater on-board security.
