Smart home, said to be still premature, has had a section of CES 2014 specifically dedicated to Smart products. Smahome editor, Gary Tang, attended CES and presented products that were highlighted. These products were categorized as follows: Cameras, door locks, door phones, powerstrips and switches, lighting, sensors, Hubs and appliances.

What makes a product Smart, is the functionality of connectivity and how it communicates with other appliances, ideally learning patterns of the user in turn making homes convenient and safe. A variety of products were introduced but popularly the cameras were a hot topic.

Examples are Piper cameras and Canary cameras with motion sensors, thermostats using Z-wave standards, significance as such being able to communicate with other Z-wave products. Another Smart product mentioned is Doorbot, which captures a picture when the doorbell is pressed, using connectivity to send the image to the homeowner's phone. Should the owner not be home, the home owner will still be able to unlock the door.

Other products mentioned were, Amaryllo baby monitors, Belkin's Smartplug, Phillips Hue's Smartbulb, Mother's sen.se, LG's Homechat, Nest's Smart thermostat, and more. What makes these brands successful, Parson Lee, MD of Messe Frankfurt New Era Media, observed, is to become user-needs and demand focused rather than hardware-software focused.
