Glasgow, a Scottish city in UK, is to receive a new video surveillance system consisting of 400 new cameras to be deployed across the city after winning government funding to become a 'city of the future'.

All cameras will feed information back to an operations hub created in the East End headquarters. According to eveningtimes.co.uk, the surveillance network will be at the forefront of technology, automatically detecting a range of situations and feeding information back for further investigation.

The cameras will be able to tell if a bag or other item is left unattended as well as detecting suspicious behavior. It is also hoped that the cameras will prevent suicides, alerting authorities if someone climbs onto a parapet.

Recently, Glasgow secured US$36.06 million(£24 million) of funding to become a “Future Cities Demonstrator”. The scheme, which is run by the Technology Strategy Board, aims to make the city a world leader in the utilization of technology to improve city living.

"As a society, we are generating more data than at any time in history,” said Gordon Matheson, Glasgow City Council leader. “By harnessing that knowledge we can improve the lives of city residents, the environment and the economy." According to stv.tv, Glasgow is currently the most violent area in the country, a statistic that the new cameras will aim to combat.
