Smiths Detection has started delivery of more than 100 advanced explosives trace detection systems to the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority.

Deployment of the desktop explosive and narcotics trace detection systems at a number of Canadian airports is due to be completed later this month. The systems will complement Smiths advanced X-ray scanners, already used by most Canadian airports to scan hand luggage at security checkpoints.

“The explosive and narcotics trace detection system, developed and manufactured in Canada, remains one of the most widely deployed trace solutions at airports around the world,” said Rene Shink, VP of Sales for Canada.

The systems analyses a swab sample to check surfaces of items for a wide range of trace explosives and narcotics. Smiths have supplied more than 24,000 trace systems worldwide for corrections, court security, aviation security, and force protection.
